This is the big course at Sand Hollow Resort in Hurricane, a John Fought design that plays 7,315 yards at par 72. The two nines feel like different courses. The front runs through red rock outcroppings, native sand bunkers and rolling fairways. After the turn, holes play right along the edge of jagged cliffs, and the resort points to dramatic elevation changes.

The hole everyone asks about is the 15th, Devil's Throat. Head pro Adam Jasperson has called it the course's most famous hole: it plays downhill from eleven tee boxes, anywhere from 160 to 245 yards, to a two-tier green with a cliff down the left side. It has a reputation for eating errant tee shots. The 18th finishes you off, an uphill par 4 with bunkers in the landing areas and a green you can't see from the fairway.

Carts are mandatory, so plan on riding. There's more golf on site too: The Links Course, a 9-holer with what the resort calls Utah's largest greens and fairways, and the Wee Course, a par-3 pitch-and-putt that's good for a warm-up before you tee off.

The resort takes reservations up to 180 days in advance, with a credit card to hold the time. Cancel or drop players at least 48 hours out, and know that pre-paid times are non-refundable with no rain checks. Playing alone? Singles can only book inside 48 hours, by calling the pro shop at (435) 656-4653. There's a dress code: collared shirts, no denim, soft spikes only.
