St. George & Southern Utah Golf Courses & Tee Times

St. George sits in Utah's southwest corner, low and warm enough that golf runs year round, and Wikipedia counts over a dozen courses in the area. The city itself got into golf in the mid-1960s with Dixie Red Hills, which the city credits with turning a desert gas-station stop into a place people came to visit. Today the area mixes four city-owned courses, Green Spring next door in Washington, and resort golf out at Sand Hollow in Hurricane, where John Fought's Championship Course runs its back nine along the edge of the cliffs.

Who runs public golf in St. George & Southern Utah

The City of St. George runs four courses: Dixie Red Hills (priced as a nine-hole course), Sunbrook, Southgate and St. George Golf Club. Southgate follows the Santa Clara River and has water on eight of its first nine holes; St. George Golf Club is a traditional par 73 with no driving range. Fees are set in two seasons, October through May and June through September, and summer is much cheaper; 18 with a cart at Sunbrook is $88 in season and $54 in summer. Local residents can buy the city's Loyalty Card for $80 a year at any of the four pro shops, which knocks down green fees, though not on Fridays and Saturdays in spring.

Why tee times in St. George & Southern Utah are hard to get

Golf in St. George & Southern Utah peaks in winter, when seasonal residents and visitors arrive. From roughly November through April, weekend mornings are the hardest times on the sheet to get, and even weekdays fill up.

Each course releases its tee times on its own schedule, commonly a week or two out, with residents of town and county courses often booking first. Leagues, outings and members claim chunks of the sheet in advance, and whatever prime weekend times are left tend to go on release day.

When tee time cancellations happen

Booked-up doesn't mean gone. Plans change: groups cancel ahead of the course's cancellation deadline (often 24 to 48 hours out), players drop when the forecast turns, and a group that shrinks leaves an open spot. Those times quietly come back on the booking page, usually for minutes, not hours.

Doing it by hand? Here's what works.

  1. Know the booking window. Find out how many days ahead each course releases times, and whether residents get an earlier window. Be ready the morning it opens.
  2. Look again 24 to 48 hours out. That's when most cancellation deadlines pass and spots come back.
  3. Be flexible on group size. Singles and twosomes fit into gaps a foursome can't.
  4. Try twilight and weekday afternoons. They're the last to fill and often cheaper.
  5. Keep a quicker course in your back pocket. Nine-hole and executive courses are easier to get on and play faster. Around here that includes The Golf Course at Sand Hollow Resort - The Links.
