About Sharpstown Park Golf Course
Sharpstown is a city-run 18 in southwest Houston, par 70 with four sets of tees and 6,660 yards from the back. It wasn't always public. Back when it was a country club it hosted the Houston Open twice: Mike Souchak won in 1964 and Bobby Nichols took his second Houston title here in 1965. After the city took it over, it sold off part of the land and shortened the course, which ended any hope of more tour events.
What's left is a quick, fair round. A 2007 Houston Chronicle review counted water in play on six holes and only 22 bunkers, which keeps the pace moving and makes it a good course for juniors and beginners. The trees are the real hazard now; a 1960s member told the pro he used to be able to hit over all of them. The greens have been upgraded to Mini-Verde ultra-dwarf Bermuda, and there's a driving cage, two putting greens and a chipping green for warming up.
