Hermann Park Golf Course

Houston's first city course, opened in 1922 on land George Hermann gave the city. Oak-lined fairways, lakes, and a 1999 redesign by Carlton Gipson.

About Hermann Park Golf Course

Hermann Park is where Houston's public golf started. George Hermann gave the city 258 acres in 1914, George Kessler's 1916 park plan set aside room for an 18-hole course open to Houstonians from all backgrounds, and after World War I stalled the work, the course opened in 1922 as the city's first municipal course. The Forward Times credits the original layout to stockbroker George V. Rotan and engineer David M. Duller, and the Civilian Conservation Corps improved the clubhouse and grounds during the Depression.

The course you play today is Carlton Gipson's 1999 redesign, built with a new clubhouse. BSL Golf, which has run it for the city since 1989, added nine lakes and planted more than 1,200 trees, so you're playing down oak-lined fairways with water in the mix, a few minutes from the Medical Center, the Museum District and Rice.

It matters to a lot of people. The Hermann Park Conservancy says it was the first golf course in the country to be integrated, and its general manager, Maulana Dotch, has said many Houstonians had their first golf experience here. The city declared March 15, 2022, Hermann Park Golf Course Day for the centennial.
