About Rockwood Park Golf Course
Rockwood Park is a 1938 city course that was rebuilt almost from scratch. John Bredemus designed the original, which opened in 1938, and Ralph Plummer updated it later. The old place had a third nine, the Blue. In November 2015 the city closed it for a $5.1 million rebuild by John Colligan and Trey Kemp, who reused part of the Blue Nine's land, rerouted everything, and reopened it on June 30, 2017 as a par 72. It drew 40,000 rounds in its first full year.
The rebuild kept the history where it could. Kemp worked from 1940s photographs to recreate some of the greens, and the rectangular 9th green doubles as an optional tee for the 1st. A rock bridge built by WPA workers in the 1940s is still there. You get views of downtown Fort Worth and the Trinity River, wide fairways edged with native grass, TifEagle greens and bright white-sand bunkers.
GolfPass's 2017 look at the course picked out a few holes. The 7th is a drivable par 4 with deep bunkers, and an iron off the tee to leave a full wedge is the safer play. The 8th is Kemp's favorite, a 142-yard par 3 that drops downhill from the highest point on the property. The back nine is about 300 yards longer and plays harder, finishing with a par 5 that has deep cross bunkers about 50 yards short of the green. Tees sit close to the greens, so it walks easily.
