About Morris Williams Golf Course
Morris Williams is the city course east of downtown where you get the Austin skyline in the background. Leon Howard, one of the busiest architects of his day, designed it, and it opened in 1964 as Austin's third public course. The greens are elevated and contoured, and the ground rolls. The city says it was recently renovated, and there's a porch with rocking chairs that looks out over the whole course.

The name belongs to Morris Williams Jr., one of the best golfers Austin ever produced. He won everything from the Texas Junior Championship to the National Air Force Trophy, which now carries his name, and he died young in a jet crash during the Korean War. The course was later home to the University of Texas golf team under coach George Hannon, when the Longhorns won two NCAA titles with teams led by Tom Kite and Ben Crenshaw.
