About Harvey Penick Golf Campus
The Harvey Penick Golf Campus is First Tee — Greater Austin's home course, a 112-acre PGA Tour-designed campus in East Austin that opened in 2005. First Tee owns and runs it as a nonprofit, and every dollar stays on the property or pays for its youth programs. The land is leased from the East Communities YMCA.
The golf is a par 30: three par 4s and six par 3s, with four sets of tees. It sits in a wooded valley and crosses Walnut Creek three times, and apart from the hill down into the valley and back out, it's flat. It's about a two-mile walk and usually takes an hour and a half. The holes are named for First Tee values, and the 7th, Perseverance, is the one everyone knows: a big pecan called Harvey's Tree splits the fairway, and you play past it on the left.
It's also one of the better practice setups in town: a grass range, two practice greens, two practice bunkers and a 3-hole short course that's free with a large bucket or a round. It was Austin's first FootGolf course, too. Expect company: First Tee classes, UT golf classes, Concordia's team and junior events all use it. It's open 364 days a year, dawn to dusk.
