About Lions Municipal Golf Course
Muny is Austin's oldest public course. The Lions Club opened it in 1924 as a nine-hole course on land leased from the University of Texas's Brackenridge Tract, and the back nine was done by September 1925. The city took over the lease in 1936, and the name stuck: Lions Municipal, or just Muny.
The list of people who have played it is long: Ben Hogan, Byron Nelson, Sandra Haynie, Tom Kite and Ben Crenshaw. Tom Penick was head pro from 1927 to 1961. The hole everyone knows is Hogan's Hole, today's 16th: in a 1950 exhibition with Harvey Penick before that year's U.S. Open, Hogan is said to have stood on the tee and asked where the fairway was.
It matters beyond golf. The city says Muny was one of the first courses in the South to desegregate, before Brown v. Board of Education in 1954, and it's listed on the National Register. The Texas Golf Hall of Fame added it to the Texas Registry of Historic Golf Courses, and it still hosts the Firecracker Open, the oldest amateur tournament in Texas. Save Muny was formed in 1987 to keep it a city course open to the public.
