Northwoods Golf Club

A P.B. Dye design, now called The Spur, long home to the Midlands' weekly dogfights, where top amateurs and pros like Tommy Gainey came for a game.

About Northwoods Golf Club

The Spur at Northwoods is the old Northwoods Golf Club, a P.B. Dye design (Pete Dye's son) that Discover South Carolina says opened in 1989. It stretches 6,800 yards and plays to a par of 72.

Its reputation was built on competition. For years the club ran 'dogfights' several times a week, and the area's best amateurs, plus a number of South Carolina pros including PGA Tour player Tommy 'Two Gloves' Gainey, came out for them.

The 2007-09 downturn hit the family-owned club hard and the turf slipped. Empire Sports Management, owned by Charleston attorney Joe Rice, bought it, renamed it The Spur to match the Western theme of his Bulls Bay club, and put about $1 million into new carts, maintenance and kitchen equipment and a refreshed clubhouse. The head pro told Discover South Carolina that better turf is what brought players back.
