Rose City Golf Course

Built in 1923 on an old racetrack and airfield. Long par 4s between the trees, and a 1932 brick clubhouse on the National Register.

About Rose City Golf Course

Rose City is Portland's second oldest municipal course, open since 1923 in the middle of the northeast side neighborhoods, just west of Rocky Butte. It's a classic tree-lined parkland course, and the city's own summary of it is short and fair: long par 4s and tree-lined fairways. The map survey agrees: all 18 holes have trees along them, nine bend (six of them left), six have water nearby, and there are only 23 bunkers, on ground that changes about 27 feet top to bottom. Course character from OpenStreetMap contributors' survey data.

The land has a strange past. It was once the Portland Country Club, the front nine was one of four racetracks, it was the area's first landing field for airplanes, and the American Legion once staged a head-on collision between two locomotives here. The course site sums it up as planes, trains, horses, motorcycles and cars.

The clubhouse is worth the stop on its own. Herbert A. Angell designed it, it opened in 1932, and it's on the National Register of Historic Places: brick, steep pitched roofs, a big rock fireplace and a fir ceiling inside. The Rose City Grill serves breakfast and lunch, and there's seating by the putting and chipping area and a picnic area toward the first tee. Portland Parks and Recreation owns it, KemperSports runs it, and recent work has made it more playable year round.
