The original Heron Lakes 18, opened in 1971 on the site of Vanport, the wartime city a 1948 flood wiped out. Hosted the 1979 U.S. Amateur Public Links.

About Heron Lakes — Greenback

Greenback is the older of the two 18s at Heron Lakes, the city's 36-hole complex in north Portland, and it's the one that started it all. It opened in 1971 as West Delta Park Golf Course, with the clubhouse, and got the Heron Lakes name later, when more holes went in next door and eventually became the Great Blue. It's city-owned and run by Portland Parks & Recreation, with KemperSports managing it since 2008.

The ground has a story. The land sits between the Willamette River and the Columbia Slough, a natural flood plain, and was once part of Vanport, built from 1943 to house nearly 40,000 shipyard workers and at the time the second-largest city in Oregon. On May 30, 1948, the Columbia broke through a 200-foot gap in the dike; the flood killed 15 people and all but wiped the city out. Almost two decades passed before work on the golf course began.

Greenback has real tournament history for a muni. It hosted the 1979 U.S. Amateur Public Links and the PGA Northwest Open from 1988 to 1991. It's also the cheaper of the two courses on the summer rate card, a few dollars under the Great Blue, and there's no dress code.
