About Eastmoreland Golf Course
Eastmoreland is Portland's old-guard muni: laid out in 1917 by H. Chandler Egan, a National Amateur champion, on 160 acres the Ladd Estate Company let the city use tax-free. The push came from parks superintendent James O. Conville and T. Morris Dunne of the Multnomah Athletic Club, who raised the first $3,000 by selling $100 lifetime subscriptions. Wikipedia calls it the second-oldest course in Oregon.
It plays through the trees in SE Portland, with Crystal Springs Lake, the Rhododendron Gardens and Johnson Creek around the edges. The city's own description is tree-lined fairways and natural hazards: ravines, streams and lakes. The map survey backs that up, with 17 of 18 holes lined by trees and water in play on seven. Course character from OpenStreetMap contributors' survey data. Par is 72 at 6,513 yards from the Blue tees (72.0 rating, 130 slope), so it's not long, but it asks for accuracy. Herons and wood ducks are regulars.
It hosted the U.S. Amateur Public Links in 1933 and again in 1990, and Golf Digest ranked it among the top 25 public courses in the U.S. in the early 1990s. The two-level driving range is covered and lit until 10 p.m., so it's a year-round practice spot too.
It's one of 52 courses Yoink watches in the Portland area, and the closest alternative is Lake Oswego Public Golf Course, about 5 miles away — handy when your first choice is booked solid.
