About Sonoma Ranch Golf Course
Sonoma Ranch sits in the foothills of the Organ Mountains, right in the middle of Las Cruces, and it's fully public. Cal Olson, whose courses run from Singapore to Canada, designed it, and it opened in 2000. The fairways roll, there are bunkers all over, and the greens are what people remember: bentgrass with a lot of movement in them. Spend a few minutes on the practice green before you go out.
There are five sets of tees, and the scorecard matches them to handicap: black for 1 to 4, blue for 5 to 9, white for 10 to 19, tan for 20 to 29 and teal for 30 and up. The front nine alone is 3,305 yards and par 35 from the blacks, with a 600-yard par 5 on it, so be honest about which box you pick.
The course recently reseeded the whole property to build back stronger turf, and the fleet is new Club Cars with Visage GPS. The Sunset Grill has views over the course and the city, and the range closes an hour before sunset.
It's one of 7 courses Yoink watches in the Las Cruces & Southern New Mexico area, and the closest alternative is New Mexico State University Golf Course, about 4 miles away — handy when your first choice is booked solid.
