New Mexico State University Golf Course

Floyd Farley's 1963 campus course, where Rich Beem learned the game: fairways pinched by old pines and oaks, small bentgrass greens, three NCAA finals.

About New Mexico State University Golf Course

NMSU is a parkland course in the high desert, not a target-golf layout. Floyd Farley designed it and it opened in December 1963, and the pines and oaks planted since have grown in and narrowed the fairways. The greens are small to mid-sized bentgrass. It's a par 72 with four sets of tees, and the par 3s carry a lot of the weight: the 2nd plays 216 yards and the 17th 225. The 11th is the one with the view, a downhill 197-yarder with the city, the Mesilla Valley and campus behind the green. The hardest holes are long par 4s like the 451-yard 7th, but the 8th and 12th are par 5s long hitters can reach in two.

It has a real golf pedigree. The course has hosted three NCAA national championships plus WAC tournaments and USGA qualifiers, and Golf Digest named it the second-best public course in New Mexico in 1996. Rich Beem, Bart and Brad Bryant and Tom Byrum all learned the game here before the PGA Tour. It's home to the Aggies' golf teams and the university's PGA Golf Management students, and it doubles as the cross-country course that hosted the 2017 WAC championship. The patio looks at the Organ Mountains and A Mountain.
