About Hopewell Valley Golf Club
Hopewell Valley was a private club for almost 90 years. Thomas Winton, a Scottish architect, designed it in 1927 on the farm where pharmacist Ephraim Wells had bred horses, including the famous trotter Baron Dillon, and it opened to members in the spring of 1928. The clubhouse is the farm's original barn, and the 1820 Moore House, from the family that ran a mill on the Stony Brook for more than 130 years, still stands on the grounds.
Winton wrapped the front nine around the back so the Stony Brook comes into play on five holes; the scorecard marks water on 1, 4, 8, 10, 13 and 18. The NJSGA's history calls the small, Scottish-style greens the course's hardest test. The 13th is the signature hole, a par 3 with nothing but water between tee and green (175 yards from the blues). The round ends on a 570-yard par 5, and a train still runs past the 18th green, so don't be surprised by it mid-putt. It's a par 72 of 6,612 yards from the back tees, on mature, tree-lined ground.
The club reopened with limited public play under new owners in 2016, was closed again by 2020, and was bought by Mercer County for $1.9 million that December. Now the Mercer County Park Commission runs it as a public course, with a range, locker rooms, a patio above the 18th green, the Baron Dillon Grille, and tennis, pickleball, paddle tennis and a pool.
It's one of 75 courses Yoink watches in the Northern & Central New Jersey area, and the closest alternative is Heron Glen Golf Course, about 6 miles away — handy when your first choice is booked solid.
