About Mercer Oaks West Golf Course

West is the tree-lined half of Mercer County's 36 holes at Mercer Oaks. It opened in 1991, designed by the firm Ault, Clark & Associates, and the county describes it plainly: traditional style, tree-lined fairways, big greens, plenty of bunkers. Golfadelphia's review puts the split well: the West is the parkland course, the East the more open, heathland-style one.

It's a par 72 of 7,040 yards from the black tees (74.5 rating, 140 slope), with more sets stepping down to 5,727 and a red set at 5,334. The length arrives early: from the tips the 6th is a 485-yard par 4 and the 7th a 600-yard par 5. Golfadelphia singles out the 9th, where the approach is a forced carry over water, and the 17th, where the lake opens up behind the closing holes.

The park was pieced together from more than 50 properties, many of them farms, between the late 1960s and early 1970s, and Lake Mercer's basin was dug out by selling the gravel to the contractors building the interstates. The course is open year round, weather permitting. Carts go back to the clubhouse by sunset, and if you stop for lunch at the turn you lose your place and have to check back in with the starter.
