About Horton Smith Golf Course
Horton Smith is the Park Board's municipal 18 on South Scenic, 6,312 yards with a grass driving range and a full pro shop. It's a public course for every level, and the rates are park-board rates.
The name is the story. Horton Smith was born in Springfield, turned pro in 1926 and won the inaugural Masters in 1934, then won it again in 1936. In 1930 he was the only golfer to beat Bobby Jones during Jones's Grand Slam year, at the Savannah Open. He's buried in Springfield, and this course was built in 1962 and named for him. His green jacket sold at auction in 2013 for more than $682,000.
