About Bill & Payne Stewart Golf Course
This is the Park Board's most established course: Perry Maxwell planned it, and it opened in 1947. It carries the names of two Ozarks golfers, Bill Stewart, a Missouri Amateur winner, and his son Payne, who won 11 times on tour, including two U.S. Opens and a PGA Championship.
It's a 6,162-yard par 70, so length isn't the issue. The course says the design rewards accurate iron play and puts a premium on putting. Carts have to stay 30 yards off every green and on the path at the par 3s, so expect some walking even if you ride. It's also one of Evangel University's two home courses.
You'll find two practice greens, a range, a pro shop and a snack bar, and PGA pros teach private lessons. The Betty Allison junior course at Oscar Blom shares the same address in northeast Springfield, right off I-44 at Glenstone.
It's one of 4 courses in Springfield on Yoink, and the closest alternative is Horton Smith Golf Course, about 3 miles away — handy when your first choice is booked solid.
