Southwest Michigan Golf Courses & Tee Times

Southwest Michigan golf runs from the Lake Michigan shore at Benton Harbor inland to Kalamazoo and Jackson. Harbor Shores is the headliner: a public Jack Nicklaus Signature course built on cleared industrial land along the Paw Paw River, with three holes in the dunes. In 2012 it became the Senior PGA's home course, hosting in alternate years. Jackson's Cascades goes back to 1929 and is run by the county. Paw Paw Lake Golf Club in Watervliet dates to 1918.

Good weekend tee times in Southwest Michigan go fast, and the ones that come back later (cancellations, groups that shrink) aren't announced. Yoink watches the tee sheets at 20 public courses here, from South Haven, Parma, Jackson, Coldwater and Onsted, and tells you the moment a time you want opens up.

The longest layout here is The Woodlands Course at Whittaker at 7,072 yards; there are 3 nine-hole courses.

Who runs public golf in Southwest Michigan

Jackson County owns and operates Cascades Golf Course in Sparks Foundation County Park, next to the Cascade Falls. The park came to the county after William Sparks died in 1943. Cascades has an 18, a short 9-hole course and a range, and has hosted qualifiers for the U.S. Amateur, Michigan Open and Michigan Amateur. Most other public golf here is privately owned daily-fee: Olde Mill near Kalamazoo (open since 1958), the Woodlands Course at Whittaker in New Buffalo (1996) and Paw Paw Lake. Harbor Shores is a not-for-profit development; revenue above costs goes back into Benton Harbor job training and education.

Why tee times in Southwest Michigan are hard to get

The season in Southwest Michigan is short, running roughly from late spring into fall, so every good weekend in that window is contested. The first warm Saturdays of the year are the hardest tee times to get.

Most public courses open their tee sheet a set number of days ahead, often 7 to 14, and many municipal courses give residents or card holders an earlier window. The best weekend-morning times usually go the day they're released. Leagues and outings take blocks of the sheet before the public ever sees them.

When tee time cancellations happen

A full tee sheet rarely stays full. Many courses let you cancel without a fee up to 24 or 48 hours before your time, so spots tend to reappear in the last couple of days. A bad forecast shakes more loose, and a foursome that drops to three opens a single. None of it is announced. The time just shows up again on the booking page, and whoever looks first gets it.

Doing it by hand? Here's what works.

  1. Know the booking window. Find out how many days ahead each course releases times, and whether residents get an earlier window. Be ready the morning it opens.
  2. Look again 24 to 48 hours out. That's when most cancellation deadlines pass and spots come back.
  3. Be flexible on group size. Singles and twosomes fit into gaps a foursome can't.
  4. Try twilight and weekday afternoons. They're the last to fill and often cheaper.
  5. Keep a quicker course in your back pocket. Nine-hole and executive courses are easier to get on and play faster. Around here that includes Cascades Short Course - 9 Holes, Gauci Golf Resort - 9 Holes (Formerly Irish Hills Golf Course) and Lake Leann Golf Course - 9 Holes.
