About Tex Consolver Golf Course
Tex Consolver is Wichita's long one: a par 72 that reaches 7,361 yards from the tips, the longest of the city's public courses and one of the longest in Kansas. Bob Dunning built it as a prairie course in Pawnee Prairie Park on the west side of town, so the fairways are open and the greens are large and rolling, designed to hold up against the Kansas wind. Water comes into play on six holes. It's also the busiest city course; the city says it often leads in rounds played each year.
It used to be called Pawnee Prairie. On December 21, 1999, the City Council voted to rename it for Beal "Tex" Consolver, Wichita's "Mr. Public Golf," and it was dedicated under the new name on June 6, 2000. By his own estimate Consolver taught more than 35,000 rounds of golf, five of his students went on to join the PGA, and he helped start the first Kansas State Junior Championship and the Wichita Golf Association.
The golf shop has certified club fitters and handles regrips and shaft work, and there's food at the clubhouse.
