About Arthur B. Sim Golf Course

Sim sits in a bend of the Arkansas River in the Museum District, with downtown in the background. It's 6,330 yards and par 71, and Golf Wichita calls it straightforward: tree-lined fairways leading to well-bunkered greens. The finish is the unusual part. The 17th and 18th are both par 5s, over 550 yards each from the blue tees, so the round ends with two chances to get one back. Visit Wichita calls it the busiest municipal course in the city, at around 40,000 rounds a year.

The land is a memorial. Arthur Barnes Sim, an oil man and the only son of real estate man Coler L. Sim, died in 1916, and his father gave the city 157 acres and asked that they become a park and golf course in Arthur's memory. The city acquired the park in 1917, and Visit Wichita dates the course to 1919 with a design by Morris Richard Perkins. The course, clubhouse and park entrance were all finished before the Depression.

Look for the stone shelters on the 13th, 15th and 18th tees. The National Youth Administration built them in the 1930s in the Rustic Park style, and they're listed with the Kansas Historical Society as the only surviving work in Wichita by that New Deal program. Part of the park is also home to Old Cowtown Museum.
