About MacDonald Park Golf Course
MacDonald is Wichita's oldest course. It started life in 1913 as the original Wichita Country Club and is now one of the city's municipal courses. It's a par 72 of 6,958 yards from the blues (73.7 rating, 132 slope), with 6,378 from the whites and 5,451 from the golds, and mature cottonwoods line the fairways. For a few years the geese were winning: rounds fell as the flock and the mess grew. In 2019 the city bought a trained goose dog, Jack, from Fly Away Geese in North Carolina. He's now on the parks staff, the goose droppings are off the greens, and the city says rounds are up 82%.
The city has put work into the course since then: sod in the fairways, a cleaner cut of rough, bigger collars on 15 greens, and a third fairway shifted east so tee shots stop drifting toward the range. New forward tees shorten the par 4s at 3, 5, 14, 15 and 16, and new back tees on 2, 9, 10 and 18 add length. On May 23, 2020, the range at the Steve Hatchett Youth Golf Campus opened, built with private money by First Tee Greater Wichita, which has its home on the northwest edge of the course.
