Western Kansas Golf Courses & Tee Times

Western Kansas golf is mostly city golf on open, windy ground. Buffalo Dunes in Garden City and Mariah Hills in Dodge City are both municipal Frank Hummel designs. Hays has had golf since 1929, on land that was once part of the Fort Hays military post. Buffalo Dunes turns 50 in 2026 and has hosted an Epson Tour event since 2014; Lilia Vu won it in 2021.

Good weekend tee times in Western Kansas go fast, and the ones that come back later (cancellations, groups that shrink) aren't announced. Yoink watches the tee sheets at 6 public courses here, from Garden City, Dodge City, Cimarron and Hays, and tells you the moment a time you want opens up.

Who runs public golf in Western Kansas

Garden City runs Buffalo Dunes, opened in 1976: 18 holes, par 72, 6,806 yards from the tips, with few trees to block the wind. Superintendent Clay Payne and architects Zach Varty and Todd Clark rebuilt it three holes a year from 2021 to 2025, filling ponds, clearing non-native trees and rebuilding every green and bunker for under $700,000. Mariah Hills in Dodge City started as an 18-hole sand-green course and got bent greens and fairway irrigation in 1974. The City of Hays parks department runs Fort Hays Municipal, which grew from a nine-hole sand-green course into an 18 with water on nine holes.

Why tee times in Western Kansas are hard to get

The season in Western Kansas runs roughly from spring to late fall. The first warm weekends in spring and the cool, dry weekends of fall are the hardest to book.

Most public courses open their tee sheet a set number of days ahead, often 7 to 14, and many municipal courses give residents or card holders an earlier window. The best weekend-morning times usually go the day they're released. Leagues and outings take blocks of the sheet before the public ever sees them.

When tee time cancellations happen

A full tee sheet rarely stays full. Many courses let you cancel without a fee up to 24 or 48 hours before your time, so spots tend to reappear in the last couple of days. A bad forecast shakes more loose, and a foursome that drops to three opens a single. None of it is announced. The time just shows up again on the booking page, and whoever looks first gets it.

Doing it by hand? Here's what works.

  1. Know the booking window. Find out how many days ahead each course releases times, and whether residents get an earlier window. Be ready the morning it opens.
  2. Look again 24 to 48 hours out. That's when most cancellation deadlines pass and spots come back.
  3. Be flexible on group size. Singles and twosomes fit into gaps a foursome can't.
  4. Try twilight and weekday afternoons. They're the last to fill and often cheaper.
  5. Widen the map. If your first choice is full, check the next town over. Garden City has 2 courses on Yoink and Dodge City has 2.
