"The Fort" sits on the southwest edge of town off the Highway 183 bypass, on land that was once part of the Fort Hays military post. The city describes it as part links, part parkland, and the wind is a big part of that: the prevailing southwest wind changes how holes play, the elevation changes are trickier than they look, and the greens are fast. It started in 1929 as a nine-hole course with sand greens. Since then it has grown to 18 holes with irrigated bluegrass fairways and bentgrass greens. It's a working town course: there's a driving range, a practice green, club repair and men's and ladies' associations, and you can bring your own cart for a yearly trail fee.
