About Sykes/Lady Overland Park Golf Course
Sykes/Lady is Overland Park's original city course and, by the city's count, the most-played course in the Kansas City metro. It's 27 regulation holes in three nines, South, North and West, and you play two of them. Each pairing is a par 70 for men and runs about 6,330 to 6,460 yards from the blacks, with five tees on every hole down to about 4,150 from the reds. Expect a park-like layout with wide views and large bentgrass greens. There's also a nine-hole par-3 course, a range, and Club 27 for after.
The name is a piece of city history. In the late 1960s two council members, Ben Sykes, a Democrat, and Wendell Lady, a Republican, pushed for parks together. In 1967 the bond for the city's first golf course passed by just 80 votes, and the Overland Park Golf Course opened in 1971. Sykes then talked the council into buying 280 acres on 135th Street, approved by a single vote, and that land became St. Andrews, the city's other course.
