Golfmohr Golf Club

Ted Lockie built it in 1965 on a farm the Mohrs had worked since 1867. An easy walk with big rolling greens and four lakes; a mineshaft sits behind 14.

About Golfmohr Golf Club

Golfmohr is a family story. The Mohrs started farming this ground off Hubbard Road in 1867, and for a while two coal mines ran on the property; there's still a capped mineshaft behind the 14th tee. In the early 1960s Jake and Lorraine Mohr were trying to turn the farm into a campground when Jake met Ted Lockie, a PGA pro and inventor who designed and built nearly 50 courses around the Midwest. They went in as partners, and the 18 opened in 1965 as a daily-fee course, with green fees at $2.

It's gently rolling, so it's an easy walk, and the greens are large and softly contoured. Four man-made lakes add about five acres of water. There used to be an apple orchard where the 8th and 9th fairways are, and the club has planted 50 apple trees to remember it. It's a par 72 that plays 6,855 yards from the blues on the scorecard, with six sets down to 4,903, and the 18th is a 612-yard par 5 from the back.

Quad Cities USA Golf Course Corporation has owned it since 1982. Since then it has replaced the irrigation, planted more than 400 trees and shrubs and added 31 tees. The club says it was the first course in the Quad Cities to offer twilight and senior rates.

It's one of 11 courses Yoink watches in the Quad Cities area, and the closest alternative is Byron Hills Golf Course, about 4 miles away — handy when your first choice is booked solid.
