About Princeville Makai Golf Club - Makai Course
Makai was Robert Trent Jones Jr.'s first solo design, opened in 1971 at Princeville on Kauai's North Shore. It winds past lakes and native woods out to the coastline, with six oceanfront holes and views of Bali Hai and Hanalei Bay. It's a par 72 with six sets of tees, stretching past 7,200 yards from the tips.
The hole on the postcard is the 7th, a 213-yard par 3 from the back where you tee off over the cliffs to a green wrapped in white bunkers. Jones came back for a $6 million renovation that put seashore paspalum on every fairway and green, rebuilt the green complexes and reshaped every bunker; Golf Inc. named it Top Renovation of the Year in 2011. The map survey counts about 85 bunkers and water on six holes. Course character from OpenStreetMap contributors' survey data.
It was 7th on Golf Magazine's 2022/2023 list of the best courses in Hawaii. The practice area is a real one, with two big tees, seven target greens and a short-game complex, and the club also runs a disc golf course and sunset cart tours.
It's one of 5 courses Yoink watches in the Kauai area, and the closest alternative is Puakea Golf Course, about 19 miles away — handy when your first choice is booked solid.
