About Poipu Bay Golf Course

Poipu Bay is Robert Trent Jones Jr.'s resort course on Kauai's South Shore, 210 oceanfront acres between the mountains and the sea cliffs, next to the Grand Hyatt. It has 85 bunkers, five water hazards and seashore paspalum greens, and the trade winds change from day to day, so how it plays depends on the breeze. The back nine is where the ocean views are, and the 16th is the hole people know: a 501-yard par 4 along the clifftops to a green partly hidden behind an ancient rock wall.

From 1994 to 2006 it hosted the PGA Grand Slam of Golf, a 36-hole event for that year's four major champions. Tiger Woods won it five years running from 1998 to 2002 and again in 2005 and 2006, losing only to Jim Furyk in 2003 and Phil Mickelson in 2004. In 1997 Woods got up and down from a buried lie in a 16th-hole bunker for what he called one of the best pars of his life, and Mickelson's 59 in 2004 is the course record.

The land has older history too. Ancient Hawaiian heiau and handmade stone walls, estimated at more than 500 years old, are preserved on the course; you can't enter them or play a ball out of them. Keep an eye out for monk seals, green sea turtles, humpback whales in season and nene along the way.
