About Kiahuna Golf Club
Kiahuna is Robert Trent Jones II's course in Poipu, opened in 1984, and it's the rare resort round where the history is right in the fairways. Jones worked the remains of an old Hawaiian village into the routing: preserved house sites and agricultural stone walls, a heiau by the parking lot and another left of the 11th fairway. Left of the 15th are the ruins of a 19th-century Portuguese immigrant's house, and nearby the crypt of his family. He ran the irrigation by diverting the Waikomo Stream, which still crosses the northwest corner of the course. Don't move the stones, and stay off the sites.
The strangest detail is underground. The Kauai blind cave spider, eyeless and found only in the caves of the Koloa district, lives in a lava tube whose entrance is on the 2nd hole, and Jones has said he had to move holes around during routing to stay clear of the caves. Nēnē walk the course too; shoo them gently, and from October to March watch the tall grass for nests.
