The Patch

The city's 1928 muni, rebuilt by Tom Fazio with Augusta National behind it. Reopened in 2026 with The Loop, a nine-hole short course by Tiger Woods.

About The Patch

The Patch is Augusta Municipal, and in spring 2026 it came back as close to a new course. Augusta National backed the project, and Tom Fazio led the 18-hole redesign with Beau Welling, keeping some of the original holes in mind. Off the tee the landing areas are wide and rolling, the greens are TifEagle bermuda, and the clubhouse now sits at the high point, where the first tee looks out over about 150 feet of elevation change. The property is squeezed between Wrightsboro and Damascus roads and Daniel Field's runways, and the course says it looks like an elephant: holes 5 and 6 are the trunk.

Tiger Woods led the design of The Loop at The Patch, a new nine-hole short course that tips its cap to the caddies who have used the place as a hangout for decades. Jim Dent is the best-known of them: he went on to nearly 20 years on the PGA Tour and 12 wins on the Champions tour, and the entrance road has been Jim Dent Way since 2020.

The history is long. The land was Camp Hancock in World War I. David Ogilvie's course opened on December 20, 1928, as nine holes with sand greens, went to 18 a year later, and got grass greens through a WPA project in 1936-37. Red Douglas and his family ran it for 41 years from 1952, and it was officially integrated in May 1964. The nickname is argued over: a cabbage-patch remark around 1951, a cabbage garden by the 10th tee, or a 1990s local rule that let you lift and place on the nearest patch of grass. Hurricane Helene took down 90 percent of the trees in September 2024, and the course closed that December for the rebuild.
