About Forest Hills Golf Club
Forest Hills is Augusta's Donald Ross course, opened in 1926 and now owned by Augusta University. It's a public course and the home of the university's men's and women's Jaguar golf teams; the men won back-to-back NCAA Division I titles in 2010 and 2011. The Arnold Palmer Company renovated it in the early 2000s, and Wikipedia says 13 of Ross's original holes and the clubhouse survive.
The history is the reason to come. In 1930 the Southeastern Open was played over two rounds at Augusta Country Club and two at Forest Hills. Bobby Jones shot 69 and 71 here to win by 13 strokes, and then went on to sweep all four majors that year for the Grand Slam. The course has also hosted Augusta University's men's tournament almost every year since 1979, with past fields that included Phil Mickelson, Davis Love III and Dustin Johnson.
It's a tree course more than a water course: the map survey shows trees along 16 of the 18 holes, 37 bunkers, eight doglegs split evenly left and right, and water in play on just one hole. It's one of 11 courses Yoink watches in the Augusta area, and the closest alternative is The Patch, about 3 miles away — handy when your first choice is booked solid.
