About IMG Academy Golf Club
This is the home course of the IMG Academy golf program. It opened in 1972 and was chartered as a private country club in 1980; the par-72 original measured 6,673 yards, set among slender pines, oaks, native foliage and lakes.
The course you play now dates to 2003, when Gene Bates of Palm Beach Gardens did a $2.5 million renovation. He stretched it to 6,855 yards, rebuilt the bunkers, and reversed the routing of 10 and 18, which turned No. 10 into an island green. The greens are TifEagle and the fairways TifSport. Seven sets of tees run from 6,842 down to about 5,100 yards, so there's a sensible number for everybody.
It's a cart course: two to a cart, with GPS that locks you out of restricted areas around greens and tees, and $25 extra if you want a cart to yourself. The range is mats only and tops out at 240 yards, but your tee time gets you a free half hour of warm-up. The clubhouse looks out over Sarasota Bay.
It's one of 116 courses Yoink watches in the Tampa Bay area, and the closest alternative is Manatee County Golf Course, about 2 miles away — handy when your first choice is booked solid.
