About Sebring Municipal Golf Course

Everybody in town calls it The Muni. It's the City of Sebring's course, an 18-hole par 72 on the south side of Lake Jackson, and it plays short by modern standards: 6,204 yards from the blues down to 4,800 from the reds. Walkers are welcome, and it's an old-style Florida round, relaxed rather than punishing.

The hole people talk about is the 2nd. It's a par 4 of 245 to 308 yards that turns nearly 90 degrees, and it dates back to the original routing, so the temptation to cut the corner is almost a century old. There are other doglegs, but none as sharp.

The city set aside money and 160 acres in 1924 and brought in William Herbert "Bert" Way of Cleveland's Mayfield Country Club, who also designed Pinecrest in Avon Park. Mayor William Parrish hit the first ball on February 18, 1926, when nine holes of about 3,200 yards opened; the full 18 opened in January 1929 at 6,357 yards, longer than the blue tees play today. From the 1930s into the 1950s the Harder Hall hotel next door paid the city a yearly lease so its guests could play here. The course is on the Florida Historic Golf Trail and the Citrus Golf Trail.

It's one of 2 courses in Sebring on Yoink, and Golf Hammock Country Club is practically next door — handy when your first choice is booked solid.
