About Brentwood Golf Course
Brentwood has more history than almost any nine-hole course anywhere. Jacksonville bought 146 acres in Moncrief Heights in 1922 and hired Donald Ross, and his 6,282-yard city course opened on November 8, 1923, with 50-cent green fees. It hosted the 1930 U.S. Public Links, won by local Bob Wingate, and the PGA Tour's Jacksonville Open in 1945, 1946, 1948 and 1949, with Sam Snead winning the first two. The 1952 LPGA season opened here, Louise Suggs winning, and Patty Berg won in 1953.
It's also a civil rights site. From 1952 to 1959 Brentwood hosted the Southeastern Open and Gate City tournaments for Black golfers, and Charlie Sifford won four times, at a time when Black golfers could play the course only on Mondays. In 1958 four Black golfers were turned away on a Tuesday and sued. When a federal court ordered the city's courses integrated in 1959, the city closed and sold Brentwood and Hyde Park instead. The private owners shut it in 1975.
