About Ed Oliver Golf Club

Ed Oliver is the City of Wilmington's course, on the original grounds of Wilmington Country Club off North DuPont Road, and there's been golf here since 1901. Wilfred Reid laid out the first course, Alfred H. Tull reworked it, and Edmund B. Ault refined it in 1971; the club says it has stayed largely unchanged since. From the Blue tees it's 6,173 yards (70.2 rating, 132 slope), so it's not long, but the slope says it isn't a pushover. The 18th is the one you'll remember, with a century-old chimney standing on the hole, and the Greenhill Pub looks right out at it.

The name belongs to Ed Oliver, a Wilmington native who caddied at the old Wilmington Country Club as a teenager. He won eight times on the PGA Tour, played on three Ryder Cup teams, and finished second in three majors: to Ben Hogan in the 1946 PGA Championship, to Julius Boros at the 1952 U.S. Open, and to Hogan again at the 1953 Masters.
