About Delcastle Golf Club
Delcastle is New Castle County's course on McKennans Church Road, a par 72 that Ed Ault designed and the county opened in 1971. It's a rolling, wide-open test: the fairways are generous and the bentgrass greens are large, so a good player earns their score from the back tees while everyone else can move up to the middle, blended or forward sets. The course wraps around the clubhouse, and the patio looks over the 1st tee and the 9th green.
The land has an unusual past. It was farmland owned by the Wells and Gregg families until 1915-16, when the county workhouse at Greenbank bought it and turned it into the Delcastle Prison Farm. At its height more than 150 inmates worked the dairy, grew vegetables and raised cattle and pigs, and the farm sold its produce and meat to the public. It closed in 1968, and three years later the county opened the Delcastle Recreation Center and Golf Course on the site. A state historical marker at the course now tells the story.
Readers of The News Journal voted it Delaware's No. 1 public course four years running, from 2002 to 2005. In 2009 the county brought in Billy Casper Golf to run it, with a plan that included clubhouse work, bunker restoration and bigger tees.

Rates effective May 22, 2026 include a cart: 18 holes Monday to Thursday was $58 before 2 p.m. and $70 on Friday to Sunday and holidays, dropping later in the day. Walking takes $10 off, except Friday to Sunday before 2 p.m. Kids play for $5 through Youth on Course on Monday to Wednesday after 3 p.m.
