About Redlands Mesa Golf Course

Redlands Mesa is Jim Engh's course in Grand Junction's red-rock mesas, 7,007 yards laid over what Colorado AvidGolfer calls a vertiginous high-desert canvas of jagged buttes and sandstone. The Colorado National Monument is to the south, the Book Cliffs are to the north and the Grand Mesa sits on the horizon. Golf Digest named it the Best New Course of 2001.

The stretch everyone talks about is Deadman's Pass, holes 14 through 17. The 14th, Temptation, dares you to cut a corner over desert rock. The 15th, Treasure, is the best birdie chance on the course. The 16th, Trial, brings water, a trench and an uphill approach. The 17th is the Crow's Nest, the highest tee shot on the property, looking out over western Colorado; the course is reopening its elevated tee boxes after years of being closed.

Engh was Golf Digest's first Golf Architect of the Year in 2003, and the Colorado Golf Hall of Fame says the eccentricities of courses he'd played in Ireland shaped his work: designs that were popular and polarizing but never forgettable. There's a grass-tee range, a chipping area and putting green, and the Ocotillo restaurant on site.

It's one of 4 courses in Grand Junction on Yoink, and the closest alternative is Tiara Rado Golf Course, about 2 miles away — handy when your first choice is booked solid.
