Lincoln Park Golf Course

The city's first muni, opened in 1926 on sagebrush land with sand greens. Still walkable, with a CCC-built rock clubhouse and a 10-acre practice ground.

About Lincoln Park Golf Course

Lincoln Park is Grand Junction's original city course. In May 1926 the council paid $6,900 for 40 acres of vacant, sagebrush-covered land east of Lincoln Park, and that October Mayor J.E. Bell hit the first ball off a sand tee, onto a clay fairway, at a sand green. Membership was $25 a year and a round cost 50 cents. For a while the first tee sat near first base of the ballfield, and during games you carried your ball 150 yards down the hole before playing.

The rock clubhouse is a Depression piece, built by the Civilian Conservation Corps starting in 1935. The Rocky Mountain Open arrived in 1939, and Babe Didrikson Zaharias reportedly played it here in the 1950s. Of the area's early courses, it's the only one still running, per the Sentinel's 2016 history.

It's nine holes from the mashie-and-niblick era, and the city's line is that it can still defend itself against modern drivers. The greens are smooth and subtly breaking, the course is an easy walk, and six sets of tees run from Black down to Family tees marked with discs. There's also a 10-acre practice area with a range and three practice greens, a few minutes from downtown.

It's one of 4 courses in Grand Junction on Yoink, and the closest alternative is Tiara Rado Golf Course, about 5 miles away — handy when your first choice is booked solid.
