About Steamboat Golf Club
Steamboat Golf Club is a nine-hole, par-35 course 6 miles west of town on US 40, right along the Yampa River, with views up the valley to the ski mountain. It was started by Yampa Valley golfers in the mid-1960s, and it's still owned by about 100 member/owners while staying open to the public.
Length isn't the defense. From the blue tees it's 2,913 yards, with one par 5 (the 2nd) and only one par 4 over 400 yards. What gets you is the rest: thick rough, a creek that wanders through, small greens that are hard to read, and old cottonwoods that knock down loose shots. The 6th has the smallest and toughest green on the course. Fairways are generous, so the game is picking your spots into the greens.
The club calls it one of the most enjoyable walking courses in the Rockies, and a nine usually takes under two hours. Afterward there's the creekside deck for lunch or a cold drink, plus free warm-up cages and a chipping and putting green.
