About TPC Harding Park Golf Club
Harding Park is San Francisco's municipal course, owned by the City and County and run by the PGA TOUR, the only city-owned public course the Tour manages. It opened in 1925, designed by Willie Watson (who also did the Olympic Club) with Sam Whiting, and named for President Warren G. Harding, a keen golfer. It sits on Lake Merced with cypress along the fairways. The map survey has trees along all 18 holes and no water in play, and seven of the nine doglegs turn left, so a draw helps. It was a regular Tour stop in the 1960s, when Ken Venturi, Billy Casper and Gary Player all won there. A renovation for Tour play softened the bunkers and added about 400 yards, and it came back as a big-event venue: the WGC-American Express event in 2005 with Tiger Woods and Phil Mickelson, the 2009 Presidents Cup, the Charles Schwab Cup finale for PGA TOUR Champions in 2010, 2011 and 2013, and the 2020 PGA, which Collin Morikawa won by two shots. The greens were redone in December 2013 and reopened in 2014.
