About Presidio Golf Course
The Presidio course is one of the oldest in the West. It started in 1895 as a nine-hole course on the Army post, when the commander, Colonel William M. Graham, let a group of San Francisco businessmen build it, and the green fee was 50 cents. President Theodore Roosevelt reviewed the troops on the links in May 1903, and after the 1906 earthquake the course became a refugee camp. Robert Wood Johnstone designed it, expanded it to 18 holes with William McEwan in 1910, and the London firm of Fowler and Simpson later lengthened it.
Today it's 6,500 yards, par 72, and it plays like the city: tight fairways, well-placed bunkers and plenty of hills, winding through eucalyptus and Monterey pine. Those trees weren't there at first. Thousands more went in during the 1930s, when the WPA ran a tree nursery in the Presidio. It has been a National Historic Landmark since 1962.
For most of its life it was an Army and private-club course. When the Presidio became a national park site, the public got in: open play started in 1995, and a Craftsman-style public clubhouse followed in 1999, with a pro shop and the Ironwoods Bar and Grill. The private Presidio Golf Club still exists, and its clubhouse sits so close to the park boundary that the awning over its front walk hangs across the line.

Booking a tee time at Presidio Golf Course
Rates since April 1, 2026: non-residents pay $135 with a cart Monday to Thursday and $150 Friday to Sunday, or $110 walking on weekdays. San Francisco residents pay $110 and $120 with a cart, or $85 walking on weekdays. On weekends the cart or push cart is included until twilight, so there's no cheaper walking rate. A 3% park fee is added to every green fee. Booking 8 to 30 days out costs a non-refundable $20 per player, and Loyalty Club members can book 14 days ahead free. Single golfers call the golf shop at 415.561.4661 ext. 1. The course is open daily from 7 a.m. to dusk, and parking in the lot is paid from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m.
