Lincoln Park Golf Course

A short, windy par 68 on the clifftops at Lands End, built over an old city cemetery. The par-3 17th looks straight at the Golden Gate Bridge.

About Lincoln Park Golf Course

Lincoln Park is the city's clifftop course at Lands End, wrapped around the Legion of Honor museum. It's a par 68, short on paper, but the city warns it plays much longer than the card: hilly ground, strong ocean wind, small undulating greens and narrow fairways lined with Monterey cypress. Accuracy counts for more than length here. The hole on every postcard is the par-3 17th, with a clear view of the Golden Gate Bridge.

The history runs deep. The land was the city-owned Golden Gate Cemetery, set up in 1868, and City Cemetery was named a San Francisco Landmark in 2022. You still play past what's left of it: the Kong Chow funerary altar near the 1st green and a bronze seamen's obelisk near the 15th. Golf here began with three holes laid out by local players; the city dates the course to 1902 and says it was built in stages by several architects, Tom Bendelow among them.

It has a literary claim too. Michael Murphy's Golf in the Kingdom mentions no other real course, and it's where The City, one of the country's oldest amateur championships, has long been played. It's cart-path only, and walking is the popular way round.

It's one of 4 courses in San Francisco on Yoink, and the closest alternative is TPC Harding Park Golf Club, about 4 miles away — handy when your first choice is booked solid.
