Sharp Park Golf Course

Alister MacKenzie's seaside muni, built between Cypress Point and Augusta and open since 1932. A seawall keeps the Pacific off the holes along the shore.

About Sharp Park Golf Course

Sharp Park is San Francisco's course, though it sits 10 miles south of the city in Pacifica where Sharp Park Road meets the Coast Highway. Alister MacKenzie designed it between Cypress Point and Augusta National, and it opened in 1932. It's a par 72 of about 6,300 yards, walkable, part seaside and part inland, with holes wrapping around Laguna Salada, Monterey cypress along the way and the Pacific headlands behind. People call it the Poor Man's Pebble Beach, and Ken Venturi called it Dr. MacKenzie's great gift to the American public course golfer. Golfweek named it one of America's 50 Greatest Municipal Courses in 2014.

The land came from Honora Sharp, who left it to the city in 1917 on condition it be a public park or playground. It was wetlands, artichoke fields and dunes; the ocean lagoon was dug out into a freshwater lake, and some tees and fairways went on islands and spits. Storms in the early 1940s washed out part of MacKenzie's routing, so a seawall went up and some holes moved inland, reached through a tunnel. Holes 12 and 16 sit right on the shore. The Spanish Revival clubhouse, from Willis Polk's office, has WPA murals. The area is home to the endangered San Francisco garter snake and California red-legged frog, and years of lawsuits over them became the Save Sharp Park fight; in 2017 the course was named a Historic Resource Property under state environmental law. By the map survey, water is in play on 9 holes. Course character from OpenStreetMap contributors' survey data.
