About Ventana Canyon Golf Club
Ventana Canyon is a member-owned club with two Tom Fazio 18s on a 600-acre desert preserve in the Catalina Foothills. The Mountain Course came first, opening on December 1, 1984 with a trailer for a clubhouse, and climbs into the foothills. The Canyon Course followed in 1988 and goes the other way: its front nine winds down through Esperero Canyon, and on the back you'll see Whaleback Rock. The club says the Canyon has generous fairways, and on both courses the greens break away from the mountain, so read the slope, not just the hole.
The hole people come for is No. 3 on the Mountain Course. It sits at the highest point on the property, a short par 3 set into the rocks of the Santa Catalinas across a canyon of cacti, and from the tee you can see across the Sonoran Desert into Mexico. Fazio called it the shortest par 3 he'd ever built and maybe one of the most expensive; the tees and cart path were built by hand. The club calls it one of the most photographed holes west of the Mississippi.
The land has a past. Patsy Gillham started the Flying V Ranch here in 1926, one of the country's original dude ranches, and Howard Hughes bought it in the 1950s. Estes Homebuilding turned part of it into the Ventana Canyon Golf and Racquet Club in 1983. The Mountain Course hosted the Merrill Lynch PGA Shootout in 1987 and 1988; Lee Trevino and Mike Hill won in 1987 in a field with Tom Watson, Payne Stewart, Fuzzy Zoeller and Ben Crenshaw. Members bought the property in 2003 through the Ventana Canyon Alliance.
