Alaska Golf Courses & Tee Times

Alaska golf runs on a short clock. The Alaska Golf Association says the season is packed into about five months, and in July the daylight runs past 11 p.m., so tee sheets fill from sunrise. The AGA was founded in 1959, the year of statehood. It is the USGA's allied association here and handles handicaps, course rating and state championships. The game came north early through the military. Fairbanks Golf & Country Club dates to 1946, and Alaska's first 18 was Moose Run's Hill Course, built by the Army Corps of Engineers at Elmendorf in 1952.

The main public 18 in town is Anchorage Golf Course, a Bill Newcomb design from 1987 on the South Anchorage hillside. The AGA gives free membership to juniors 18 and under, which includes an official Handicap Index.

Booking tee times in Alaska: the local rules

Rules vary by course. Russian Jack Springs doesn't reserve tee times; it's first come, first served. Anchorage Golf Course says summer play can start as early as 5 a.m. and run past midnight, so late tee times are a real option. Check each course's opening date. Getting a tee time in Alaska

The season in Alaska is short, running roughly from late spring into fall, so every good weekend in that window is contested. The first warm Saturdays of the year are the hardest tee times to get.

Most public courses open their tee sheet a set number of days ahead, often 7 to 14, and many municipal courses give residents or card holders an earlier window. The best weekend-morning times usually go the day they're released. Leagues and outings take blocks of the sheet before the public ever sees them.

Booked-up doesn't mean gone. Plans change: groups cancel ahead of the course's cancellation deadline (often 24 to 48 hours out), players drop when the forecast turns, and a group that shrinks leaves an open spot. Those times quietly come back on the booking page, usually for minutes, not hours.
