Virginia Beach National Golf Club

Pete Dye and Curtis Strange built it as a TPC in 1999, the city bought it in 2006, and a 2026 council vote approved cutting it to 12 holes.

About Virginia Beach National Golf Club

Virginia Beach National opened in 1999 as the Tournament Players Club of Virginia Beach, a Pete Dye and Curtis Strange design that cost $15 million, with $3.5 million from the city. It didn't make money as a TPC, so in 2006 the city bought the whole place, clubhouse and restaurant included, for $4.5 million and gave it its current name. It's a par 72 that plays over 7,000 yards from the blacks (74.0 rating, 138 slope), but the blues at 6,479 and whites at 5,942 are where most people belong.

Water is the theme. There are 11 lakes on the property, and the map survey shows water in play on eight holes, with forced carries on five and trees lining 14. Big changes are coming. The city leased it to a private operator through the Virginia Beach Development Authority, and a 2024 audit found about $2 million in building repairs and $5.7 million in lake work. In 2026 the City Council voted 9-2 to approve a plan for 659 homes and to cut the course from 18 holes to 12, with the developer's money and the sale price going to rebuild what's left.

It's one of 22 courses in Virginia Beach on Yoink, and Heron Ridge Golf Club is practically next door — handy when your first choice is booked solid.
