About Hell's Point Golf Club

Hell's Point is a Rees Jones course from 1982, tucked into the Back Bay National Wildlife Refuge at the south end of Virginia Beach. Golf Digest named it one of the country's best new courses when it opened in 1982. It's a par 72 that runs from 5,003 to 6,766 yards, rated 72.6 with a 133 slope from the blacks, so it plays harder than the yardage suggests.

It's a course of pines, water and Jones' sculpted bunkers. The 2nd, the No. 1 handicap, was voted Tidewater's Most Difficult Hole in a 1990 Virginian-Pilot poll: out of bounds left, trees right, a sloping fairway and a two-tier green. The 8th is the most photographed hole, only 155 yards but a forced carry over a bunker that stretches almost 125 yards from tee to green. The 11th is all carry over water, and the short 17th sits between two water hazards; the course itself warns that most people who go for it walk off with a 6 or worse.
