About Westlake Golf Club

This is the old Westlake, and since March 2021 it's been Copper Cove Golf Club. Longtime head pro Billy McBride III and two partners bought it and renamed it: Cove for the lake inlets that come into play, Copper for Franklin County's moonshine history. The logo has a little Mason jar on it. Before it was the Westlake it was Chestnut Creek Country Club, which is still the name of the neighborhood around it.

Russell Breeden, a Virginian with nearly 100 designs, laid it out in 1989, and it plays 6,511 yards. The opener is gentle, then it tightens up, with holes cut out of the woods and a green set beside one of the lake's coves. After that you get downhill tee shots, double doglegs, and a hole or two where long hitters can let it go. Don't come expecting lake views all the way around; the owner says it's coves on a couple of holes. Franklin County High School's team plays and practices here.

It's one of 2 courses in Hardy on Yoink, and the closest alternative is BLUE HILLS GOLF CLUB, about 9 miles away — handy when your first choice is booked solid.
