About Ashley Plantation Country Club

Ashley Plantation sits in the Blue Ridge foothills, and the club built the course around the ground it had: steep slopes and tees set up for the mountain views. Fairways have ample room off the tee, so the hills do more of the work than the width. There are 39 bunkers and six water features on 170 acres, bentgrass greens, and four sets of tees: blue, white, gold and red.

The hole with the reputation is the par 6. Visit Roanoke calls it famous and dares you to see how far you can hit your drive on it, and there's an island green on the course as well. It opened in 1999 with a housing community around it, five minutes off I-81 north of Roanoke.

It's a club with a public tee sheet: members and daily-fee players share the course. The practice setup is good, with a range over 300 yards long and automatic ball dispensers, two big putting greens and a chipping green with a bunker. The Golf Lab teaching school is on site, and the cafe cooks to order and will pack it to go for the turn. In summer there's also a three-pool aquatic complex.

Prices drop after 1 p.m. and again after 4 p.m., seniors 60 and up pay $43 Monday to Thursday, and juniors get $10 off 18. The shop opens at 6:30 a.m. from May through September.
