About Lone Star Golf Club

Lone Star is an old-school public course near the El Paso airport, designed by Marvin Ferguson in 1975. In a desert town, it's the trees you notice: more than 1,300 mature mulberry, oak, pine and willow line the fairways, with three lakes and 22 bunkers around the 18 holes and the Franklin Mountains in the background.

It looks flat, and mostly it is, with only slight elevation change. What makes it play harder than it looks is the greens, with subtle breaks, and sand traps placed with some thought.

The practice setup is the other reason locals use it: a fully lit driving range and two lighted chipping and putting greens, so you can practice after dark. There's a pro shop, lessons from PGA professionals and a restaurant and bar, the Sandtrap.

It's one of 5 courses Yoink watches in the El Paso area, and the closest alternative is Butterfield Trail Golf Club, about 3 miles away — handy when your first choice is booked solid.

Booking a tee time at Lone Star Golf Club

Call the course at (915) 591-4927 for a tee time. Posted green fees are $33 on weekdays and $43 on weekends, plus $17 for a cart; military pay $28 and $37, and seniors pay $40 with a cart on weekdays (the page gives no year). Check for aeration notices in September, when the course has played on temporary greens.
